(Part 3) The “Good News” For All Mankind:
You are Welcome Into The Jewish Fold.
So, Grab the Hem of a Jew and Say, "We Want to Come with You"
& Hashem Will Be For You Too
by Kimberly Davis
In Parts 1 and 2 of this commentary, we learned that prior to creating anything, Hashem created His word. More precisely, Hashem created His Aleph-Beit so that He could speak and therefore call everything in to being. We have learned that the Aleph was the first letter created and was shaped like an Ox and that Tav was the last letter created, and was shaped like an X or a scepter.
From these tidbits of wisdom, we learned that prior to creating any object, Hashem set in eternal stone His promise of salvation and shalom with Himself. Namely, we can understand that the highest unity with Hashem comes through the Ox, or the animal sacrifice, and therefore His Torah and keeping mitzvot. Too, we learned that the ultimate highpoint of reunification with Hashem will be brought to fruition when the world is at its lowest, moshiach arrives, and brings the world back to the high place of unity with Hashem and His Torah.
To Recap:
Hashem has promised that to those in the house of Jacob who will repent of their sins and return to Hashem (to aleph), a scepter & Redeemer (moshiach and Hashem Himself) will come (Isaiah 59:20-21)!
Even if you have bowed before idols. Even if you confessed the name of false gods for a time. Hashem’s arm is not too short to save (Isaiah 59:1). Reach out to Him, repent of your sin, turn back to Torah and mitzvot, and Hashem will have mercy.
For, in the giving of His Torah, Hashem made a way for anyone to find salvation and gain closeness to Himself in a covenantal union, like marriage.
Indeed, Hashem will take you back, as if you never left Him. For though you might have left Him and have been sent to exile in return, Hashem has never written an eternal decree of divorce to any of His chosen, Jewish people (Isaiah 50:1; Jeremiah 3). Thus, no matter the distance you have traveled away from Him, as The Good Shepherd, Hashem will tenderly care for you, bind up your wounds, and establish you on His high mountains of the Jewish nation Israel eternally to be your grazing land (Ezekiel 34:11-24).
Torah Reflects our Sinfulness: That is excellent news!
To comprehend how comprehending our sinfulness is excellent news, consider the account of king Josiah in 2 Chronicles 34-35.
When Josiah became king, he was only 8 years old and yet he did what was pleasing in the eyes of Hashem. One of the main focuses of Josiah was to cleanse the land of Israel, Jerusalem, and the Holy Temple of idols and all forms of idolatry.
One day, while his men were clearing out the Temple in order to repair all of the damage that had done by the wicked king who came before him (Manasseh), they happened upon a scroll that they did not recognize. After being read the scroll by the high priest Hilkiah, king Josiah tore his robe in anguish. Though he did not recognize the scroll as Torah, king Josiah recognized that the Jewish Israelites had not kept the words and commands of this scroll for quite some time.
King Josiah sent men to inquire about what would happen since the laws had not been kept, and the prophetess Hulda decreed by order of Hashem, a harsh and disastrous punishment for the sins of the Jewish people. But, because Josiah's heart was softened by the laws of Hashem and because he yearned to repent, not only for his own sins but also for the sins of the entire nation of Jewish people under him, Hashem promised a peaceful death to king Josiah so that his eyes would not witness the terrors and destruction that would befall his nation.
From the lowest point of his kingdom, king Josiah then raised Israel up to the highest place of Torah-abiding, idol abolishing, and Holy Day consecration.
From this account of history, we learn that recognizing our sin gives us an opportunity to begin anew with Hashem & Torah.
Like Josiah, when we are able to recognize that we have not kept all of Torah or even a single mitzvot, we then have the opportunity to repent and return to Hashem and keep our part of the wedding vow that He has made with all of His Jewish people through His eternal Torah.
For, the Torah is much more than a list of Dos and Don'ts, it is a compilation of 613 individual eternal promises and covenants. When kept, the mitzvot become the source of all blessing, which Hashem has promised to provide for the entire face of the earth for ALL ETERNITY!
The fact that the Torah and the animal sacrifices will be eternal & perpetual is excellent news! Why?
Being eternal and perpetual means that Hashem has no plans on ever destroying His Jewish people nor His covenants and promises, which He made to His elect Jewish people. Eternally engraved on the palms of Hashem’s hands, the Jewish people will never perish. Too, the eternal and perpetual nature of Torah and animal sacrifice establishes the “One Way” of righteous living eternally.
That one way is to live a life sanctified unto Hashem by living out His mitzvot daily.
In so doing, we draw closer and closer each day to the highest reaches of aleph. In living out mitzvot, we are also living out our marriage vows to Hashem. As more and more of His people repent, return, and keep mitzvot, the world is slowly but surly reshaping to be the place where Hashem will want to dwell once again.
Indeed, it is a common teaching in orthodox Judaism that when enough Jewish people repent and keep mitzvot, Hashem will send moshiach who will bring about the final touches of sanctification that will be needed to usher the entire world back to a state of complete unification with Hashem, like in the times of Gan Eden.
The good news is: gentiles can grab the hems of the Jews and come with us too!
If a gentile unites him or herself with the Jewish people and to Hashem by keeping Torah, you too can have a place in the eternal kingdom of Hashem. As it is written in Zechariah 8:20-23 (The Koren Jerusalem Bible):
כֹּ֥ה אָמַ֖ר יְהֹוָ֣ה צְבָא֑וֹת עֹ֚ד אֲשֶׁ֣ר יָבֹ֣אוּ עַמִּ֔ים וְיֹשְׁבֵ֖י עָרִ֥ים רַבּֽוֹת׃
Thus says the Lord of hosts; It shall yet come to pass, that there shall come people, and the inhabitants of many cities:
and the inhabitants of one city shall go to another, saying, Let us go speedily to entreat the favour of the Lord, and to seek the Lord of hosts: I will go also.
וּבָ֨אוּ עַמִּ֤ים רַבִּים֙ וְגוֹיִ֣ם עֲצוּמִ֔ים לְבַקֵּ֛שׁ אֶת־יְהֹוָ֥ה צְבָא֖וֹת בִּירוּשָׁלָ֑͏ִם וּלְחַלּ֖וֹת אֶת־פְּנֵ֥י יְהֹוָֽה׃ {ס}
And many peoples and strong nations shall come to seek the Lord of hosts in Yerushalayim, and to pray before the Lord.
כֹּֽה־אָמַר֮ יְהֹוָ֣ה צְבָאוֹת֒ בַּיָּמִ֣ים הָהֵ֔מָּה אֲשֶׁ֤ר יַחֲזִ֙יקוּ֙ עֲשָׂרָ֣ה אֲנָשִׁ֔ים מִכֹּ֖ל לְשֹׁנ֣וֹת הַגּוֹיִ֑ם וְֽהֶחֱזִ֡יקוּ בִּכְנַף֩ אִ֨ישׁ יְהוּדִ֜י לֵאמֹ֗ר נֵֽלְכָה֙ עִמָּכֶ֔ם כִּ֥י שָׁמַ֖עְנוּ אֱלֹהִ֥ים עִמָּכֶֽם׃ {פ}
Thus says the Lord of hosts; In those days it shall come to pass, that ten men out of all the languages of the nations shall take hold, and shall seize the skirt of him that is a Jew, saying, We will go with you: for we have heard that God is with you.
And further in Isaiah 56:1-8, Hashem has declared:
1 כֹּ֚ה אָמַ֣ר יְהֹוָ֔ה שִׁמְר֥וּ מִשְׁפָּ֖ט וַעֲשׂ֣וּ צְדָקָ֑ה כִּֽי־קְרוֹבָ֤ה יְשׁוּעָתִי֙ לָב֔וֹא וְצִדְקָתִ֖י לְהִגָּלֽוֹת׃
Thus said GOD:
Observe what is right and do what is just;
For soon My salvation shall come,
And My deliverance be revealed.
2 אַשְׁרֵ֤י אֱנוֹשׁ֙ יַֽעֲשֶׂה־זֹּ֔את וּבֶן־אָדָ֖ם יַחֲזִ֣יק בָּ֑הּ שֹׁמֵ֤ר שַׁבָּת֙ מֵֽחַלְּל֔וֹ וְשֹׁמֵ֥ר יָד֖וֹ מֵעֲשׂ֥וֹת כׇּל־רָֽע׃ {ס}
Happy is the mortal who does this,
The one who holds fast to it:
Who keeps the sabbath and does not profane it,
And holds back from doing any evil.
3 וְאַל־יֹאמַ֣ר בֶּן־הַנֵּכָ֗ר הַנִּלְוָ֤ה אֶל־יְהֹוָה֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר הַבְדֵּ֧ל יַבְדִּילַ֛נִי יְהֹוָ֖ה מֵעַ֣ל עַמּ֑וֹ וְאַל־יֹאמַר֙ הַסָּרִ֔יס הֵ֥ן אֲנִ֖י עֵ֥ץ יָבֵֽשׁ׃ {פ}
Let not the foreigner say,
Who is joined to GOD,
“ GOD will keep me apart from this covenanted people”;
And let not the eunuch say,
“I am a withered tree.”
For thus said GOD:
“As for the eunuchs who keep My sabbaths,
Who have chosen what I desire
And hold fast to My covenant—
5 וְנָתַתִּ֨י לָהֶ֜ם בְּבֵיתִ֤י וּבְחֽוֹמֹתַי֙ יָ֣ד וָשֵׁ֔ם ט֖וֹב מִבָּנִ֣ים וּמִבָּנ֑וֹת שֵׁ֤ם עוֹלָם֙ אֶתֶּן־ל֔וֹ אֲשֶׁ֖ר לֹ֥א יִכָּרֵֽת׃ {ס}
I will give them, in My House
And within My walls,
A monument and a name
Better than sons or daughters.
I will give them an everlasting name
That shall not perish.
As for the foreigners
Who are joined to GOD,
To render service,
And to love GOD’s name,
To be devoted servants—
All who keep the sabbath and do not profane it,
And who hold fast to My covenant—
I will bring them to My sacred mount
And let them rejoice in My house of prayer.
Their burnt offerings and sacrifices
Shall be welcome on My altar;
For My House shall be called
A house of prayer for all peoples.”
Thus declares my Sovereign GOD,
Who gathers the dispersed of Israel:
“I will gather still more to those already gathered.”
Correcting Misconceptions:
Before proceeding further in this discussion, it is essential to clarify the meaning of "My House shall be called A house of prayer for all peoples” from verse 7 above.
There are several misconceptions regarding The Temple and The Holy Land.
The first misconception is that people of other religions have replaced the Jewish people and therefore the temple and the Promised land belongs (and will eternally belong) to the non-Jews or the Jews who converted away from Judaism. To read more on this atrocious lie, simply look up "Replacement Theology."
The second misconception is that The Temple and the Holy Land of Israel will belong to the Jewish people, but that Hashem has stated that when His temple is rebuilt in Jerusalem for the final time, He will accept worship to any and every god in His temple for any and every person. This false notion comes from taking verse 7 of Isaiah 56 out of context.
When you read the verse in context, we can understand that what Hashem truly said is that He will accept not only native born Jewish people into His fold but also all foreigners (from any nation) who will join themselves to Him, keep His Torah, make His animal sacrifices, and keep shabbat. Then, Hashem will see that foreigner as one born in the land--He will not distinguish between native born Jewish Israelite and the righteous convert to Judaism. To Him, all will be one and the same.
Thus, The "Good News" For All of Humanity: You are welcome into The Eternal Jewish Fold
This necessity of “coming into the Jewish fold” is perhaps best understood by looking at Exodus 12 and the commandments of the Passover. As Hashem commanded in Exodus 12, in order to partake in the blessings of life, death passing over, and therefore life eternal offered by the Passover Lamb (which, as commanded in Torah, will be offered eternally), one must enter into the Jewish fold, as is required by Hashem.
As it is written in Exodus 12, the only way a “stranger” (or gentile) could receive the blessing of death passing over them (at that time, for a night) was for them to enter into the Jewish fold. This entering into the Jewish fold came by way of the circumcision of the males within any gentile family that wished to be brought into the covenant fold for the Passover (and eternally by proxy, since Passover will be celebrated eternally).
As it is written in Exodus 12:43-51 (The Koren Jerusalem Bible):
וַיֹּ֤אמֶר יְהֹוָה֙ אֶל־מֹשֶׁ֣ה וְאַהֲרֹ֔ן זֹ֖את חֻקַּ֣ת הַפָּ֑סַח כׇּל־בֶּן־נֵכָ֖ר לֹא־יֹ֥אכַל בּֽוֹ׃
And the Lord said to Moshe and Aharon, This is the ordinance of the passover: no stranger shall eat of it:
וְכׇל־עֶ֥בֶד אִ֖ישׁ מִקְנַת־כָּ֑סֶף וּמַלְתָּ֣ה אֹת֔וֹ אָ֖ז יֹ֥אכַל בּֽוֹ׃
but every man’s servant that is bought for money, when thou hast circumcised him, then shall he eat of it.
A foreigner and a hired servant shall not eat of it.
In one house shall it be eaten: thou shalt not take any of the meat outside, out of the house; neither shall you break a bone of it.
All the congregation of Yisra᾽el shall keep it.
And when a stranger shall sojourn with thee, and will keep the passover to the Lord, let all his males be circumcised, and then let him come near and keep it; and he shall be as one that is born in the land: for no uncircumcised person shall eat of it.
One Tora shall be to him that is homeborn, and to the stranger that sojourns among you.
וַֽיַּעֲשׂ֖וּ כׇּל־בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל כַּאֲשֶׁ֨ר צִוָּ֧ה יְהֹוָ֛ה אֶת־מֹשֶׁ֥ה וְאֶֽת־אַהֲרֹ֖ן כֵּ֥ן עָשֽׂוּ׃ {ס}
Thus did all the children of Yisra᾽el; as the Lord commanded Moshe and Aharon so they did.
וַיְהִ֕י בְּעֶ֖צֶם הַיּ֣וֹם הַזֶּ֑ה הוֹצִ֨יא יְהֹוָ֜ה אֶת־בְּנֵ֧י יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל מֵאֶ֥רֶץ מִצְרַ֖יִם עַל־צִבְאֹתָֽם׃ {פ}
And it came to pass on that selfsame day, that the Lord did bring the children of Yisra᾽el out of the land of Miżrayim by their hosts.
From this example, we learn that if the gentiles/strangers/foreigners wanted to partake in the blessings of Hashem, they had to unite themselves with Him by joining the Jewish fold. Then, once in the fold, like a loving Shepherd, Hashem does not see the difference between the native born and the ger tzedek. All are considered as one and all were blessed with death passing over, not only for a night but for all eternity.
Since there is one Torah for both Jewish people and gentiles alike, there is therefore one way to receive all the blessings of Hashem. That one way is to repent, return to (or go for the first time to) Hashem, love Hashem, and keep His commandments (the marriage vows He has written for all who will unite themselves with Him through the Jewish faith).
Repent & Return
Thus, whether you are a native born Jewish Israelite who has strayed or a stranger or a foreigner of the Jewish people, whoever will turn to Hashem and repent of their sins, Hashem will not turn you away. Rather, Hashem will hear from heaven (as prayed by King Solomon in 2 Chronicles 6-7), and as Hashem has promised in 2 Chronicles 7:13-14 (The Koren Jerusalem Bible):
הֵ֣ן אֶעֱצֹ֤ר הַשָּׁמַ֙יִם֙ וְלֹא־יִהְיֶ֣ה מָטָ֔ר וְהֵן־אֲצַוֶּ֥ה עַל־חָגָ֖ב לֶאֱכ֣וֹל הָאָ֑רֶץ וְאִם־אֲשַׁלַּ֥ח דֶּ֖בֶר בְּעַמִּֽי׃
If I shut up the heaven so that there is no rain, or if I command the grasshopper to devour the land, or if I send pestilence among my people;
if my people, who are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin, and I will heal their land.
To Recap from Part 1:
This healing of the land is in reference to the promised Nation State of Israel, the eternal home of the Jewish people.
No, this land will not be given to another nation, religious group, or people group. Israel is the promised eternal homeland of the Jewish people. Hashem has written His name eternally in Jerusalem, which is the stone that Hashem has made immovable (Isaiah 28:16).
Though, for a time, Zion has been trodden down under the foot of non-Jewish people and has become (for a time) a “ram in the bush” in place of the Jewish people, when the Jewish people will repent of our sins, Hashem will not only forgive our sins, but also heal the land of Israel eternally.
Her healing will be eternal and complete.
Her boarders will be established to their rightful places, as prescribed in the Tanakh. Her lands will flow with unending abundance of milk, honey, wheat, produce, and sustenance. She will live eternally in security without any enemy ever attacking her again. She will be the land of the living—indeed, she will be the land of the eternally living and the land of Torah.
All people who unite themselves to Hashem through His Torah covenant will be brought out of exile and be brought in to the promised land of Israel, never to leave again (Micah 4:5-6; Isaiah 11:11-12; Jeremiah 23:3; Jeremiah 31:8; Zephaniah 3:19-20; Ezekiel 34:16; Ezekiel 37:21-22 ).
At that time, moshiach will be present, Torah will be kept perfectly, and thus Hashem will be happy to come home and dwell amongst His people in Jerusalem, the city where He has eternally written His own name (Ezekiel 36:16-38).
In this state of closeness with Hashem, there will be utter freedom from the harsh yoke of Babylon, hard labor, and toil in vanity, as the curse for Adam’s sin will be broken (Isaiah 11:6-9; Isaiah 55). Instead, all labors will cease, and eternal Shabbat will begin. Rest, Torah study, and unearned prosperity will come as promised blessings for keeping the mitzvot of Hashem (Deuteronomy 7; 11; 28:1-14).
In this state of reinstated unity with Hashem and His holiness, as one walks heart-in-heart with Hashem, the innate inner spark of Hashem will grow in to blazing flame of righteousness.
In this way, the Jewish people (both the native and the non-native) will have a “new spirit” or “the spirit of Hashem” in us, as is promised in Ezekiel 36:16-38. This spirit will be new in a sense that no one will have to learn Torah anymore, rather with willing hearts, minds, spirits, and souls, we will just do and live out Torah. With the Jewish people perfectly keeping the Law of Hashem, Hashem will pour out the blessings of heaven upon the Jewish people and the Jewish nation eternally (and, anyone who takes the surname of Israel through faith) (Deuteronomy 28; Isaiah 44:5).
Tying it all together:
At the outset of this commentary series, we saw that at the outset of creation, Hashem's first act was to create His word. From the Aleph to the Tav, Hashem inscribed His redemptive plans in Hebrew stone.
We said that the aleph represents the oneness and unity of Hashem, and was first pictured as an ox. The Tav on the other hand is the lowest point, pictured as a scepter. This scepter is promised to be wrought by moshiach, who will come to restore the world back to unity with Hashem through (most poignantly) the teaching of Hashem's Torah. Through wisdom will come mitzvot keeping and thus a restored state of being to that of Gan Eden, shalom, and blessing.
This returning brought on by moshiach will come when the world is in a place of sin, darkness, and despair. Yet, in contrast, the Jewish children of Hashem will be in a state of ever-growing holiness through mitzvot keeping. As the world reaches the bottom, moshiach will come to gather the Jewish people and raise us, back to aleph, the unity of Hashem, truth, eternal life, and peace.
The good news is, however, is that Hashem welcomes all people into His fold. Thus, whether you have been a perpetrator of violence against the Jewish people, a Jewish person who has gone astray to worship other gods, or anything in between the good news is the same: If you will repent of your sins, return (or turn for the first time to) Hashem and keep His Torah, He promises to love you as if you never hurt Him or His people, and like a loving Shepherd, He scoop you into His loving-care, He will secure you from eternal harm, and He will mark you out for eternal life. Thus,
וִידַעְתֶּ֗ם כִּ֣י בְקֶ֤רֶב יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ אָ֔נִי וַאֲנִ֛י יְהֹוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֵיכֶ֖ם וְאֵ֣ין ע֑וֹד וְלֹא־יֵבֹ֥שׁוּ עַמִּ֖י לְעוֹלָֽם׃ {פ}
And you shall know that I am in the midst of Yisra᾽el, and that I am the Lord your God, and there it is none else: and my people shall never be ashamed.
(Joel 2:27; The Koren Jerusalem Bible)
